Description
The lychgate to All Souls Church, built in the early 1850s, is likely designed by architect Edwin Nash, who also constructed the nearby church. This Gothic-style lychgate is a timber-framed structure made of oak, featuring a handmade roof with alternating plain and decorated tiles. It consists of four square upright posts that support a gabled kingpost roof. The gables are adorned with trilobed bargeboards, and the bargeboards closest to the street display the inscription "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." Attached to the front posts are gates made of oak planks with serrated tops and large original iron hinges. The lychgate served as a shelter for resting coffins before they were taken into the church for funerals. It remains an unaltered mid-19th century lychgate, likely by the same architect as the church.
