Description

Barton's Cottages are a timber-framed house, likely dating from the 16th century or earlier, that has been divided into four separate dwellings. Each of the dwellings has two storeys and one window. The roof is hipped and tiled, with a central chimney. The front facade is of red brick dating from the 18th century, featuring blue headers. A plinth is present, along with a moulded wood eaves fillet. A gabled dormer is located on the left side. A first-floor band runs along the elevation. The ground floor has four panelled doors, each sheltered by a bracketed hood. There are 19th-century casements in the central part of the building, a 19th-century sash window on the left, and an 18th-century sash window on the right, all set beneath shallow segmental arches. An overhanging first floor on the left return shows the original timber framing. The rear of the building forms a shallow U-shape. Some exposed timbers are visible inside. Barton’s Cottages form a group with Eversley and Dilgerts, Darenth Cottage, Markwick, Nigel Coleman Antiques, No 5 Barton's Cottages, John McMaster, Cowlard’s Bakery and P J Donaghue, hairdresser.
