Description

Charlton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with later alterations and a partly 19th-century facade. It is timber framed, with the right end bay featuring exposed framing and plaster infilling on the first floor, while the ground floor has render above a brick base. The rest of the building is tile-hung on both floors, topped with a plain tile roof. The structure is two storeys high, with the right end bay jettied at the front and rear, and an underbuilt jetty on the right gable end. The first floor has broadly-spaced studding with tension braces. The flying wall-plate at the front is no longer present, and the eaves follow the line of the inner wall-plate, extending down over the right end bay. The left end bay is now unjettied and flush with the hall wall at the front. There is an arch-braced flying wall-plate at the rear. The roof is gabled to the left and hipped to the right, with a gable end stack on the left and a multiple brick ridge stack on the front slope of the roof to the right end of the hall. The fenestration is irregular, featuring two 4-light casements on the left section and one 3-light casement on the right end bay. There is a ribbed door under a flat corniced hood towards the centre of the left section, which is to the left of the centre of the whole. A blocked doorway with durns is located at the rear of the right hall bay, and there is a short rear wing towards the centre. The interior has not been inspected.
