Description

Sparks Hall is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with later alterations. It is timber framed with plaster infilling, except for the left end bay, which features a painted brick ground floor and a rendered first floor. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The hall consists of two unequal-length bays, with separately-framed, storeyed additions at each end. The left addition has two bays, is unjettied, and only slightly projects; it is not framed as cross-wings. The building is two storeys high with attics, set on a stone plinth. The hall is close-studded, featuring a deep cill towards the base of the left bay and a full-height post that subdivides the right bay. There are two tension braces in the right end bay. The roof is hipped, and the line of the wall-plate of the projecting bays continues over the hall, with boxed eaves. A multiple brick stack is located in the left end of the right hall bay, and there is a large gabled dormer. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of five casements: one small two-light window at the left end, one three-light window in the left end bay, one four-light window in the left hall bay, one two-light window in the right hall bay, and one three-light window in the right end bay. There is a blocked window with a pegged cill to the left of the right hall bay. A 20th-century ribbed door leads up three steps to the right end of the right hall bay, and there is a lean-to on the left. Inside, the framing is exposed, with gunstock jowls, a moulded central crown-post, plain end-of-hall crown-posts, and 17th-century panelling in the left bay of the hall.
