Description

Scragged Oak Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-17th century. It is timber-framed with rendered infilling, and the left gable end is weatherboarded. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has two storeys. The front of the house is symmetrical, featuring three timber-framed bays supported by eight full-height posts: one at each end, one halfway across each end bay, and one on either side of the central bay. Within the central bay, there is an additional post located about one foot from the posts at either end. Each end bay on the first floor has two tension braces curving towards the centre of the building, with one brace connecting to the half bay post and one to the end post of the central bay on each side. The studs are relatively closely spaced and of slight scantling. The roof is hipped at the left end, and there is a stack on the front slope of the roof at the left end of the central bay. A 20th-century panelled door is set within a 20th-century brick porch at the left gable end. At the right end, there is a rear brick lean-to, while the left end features a timber-framed lean-to with a flint extension. A concrete datestone in the 20th-century brick gable end on the right indicates the year 1655. Inside, the farmhouse has exposed beams and posts, and the tie-beams were formerly braced. The roof includes raked queen-posts or struts that are partially exposed.
