Description

A barn dating from the 17th century, located approximately 2 yards north of Arnold Farmhouse, with timbers possibly reused from the 16th century or earlier, and altered in the late 18th or early 19th century. The barn is timber-framed, with the lower half rebuilt in the late 18th or early 19th century using red brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The upper section is weatherboarded. The right gable end, facing the road, is in English bond, with older bricks visible lower down. A lean-to addition extends from the right side of the front elevation, built of red brick in an English garden wall bond towards the base and English bond above, partly on a stone plinth. The roof is covered in plain tiles, hipped to the left side and half-hipped to the right. A double doorway, sheltered by an 18th-century canopy, is positioned to the left of the lean-to, slightly left of centre. Two small, arched openings are visible near the base of the lean-to wall. Inside, the barn has four bays with a rear aisle. Notable features include sharply jowled arch-braced posts, some arch bracing to the walls, and an edge-halved wall-plate scarf joint. The roof is a staggered butt side purlin design with short straight wind braces.
