Description

Vale House is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, potentially with an earlier core, and incorporating later alterations. It is constructed of purplish-red brick in Flemish bond, with lighter red brick dressings. A gable end of the left return wing is likely timber-framed, but now rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement. A chamfered brick plinth is visible, as is a moulded and dentilled wooden eaves cornice which returns on both the right and left elevations. The roof is hipped with returning hips, and there are rear stacks to the left and right. Two small gabled dormers are present, each with a moulded cornice and a two-light casement window. The front elevation has a regular three-window arrangement; two windows are 16-pane sashes, and the central window is a 12-pane sash, all originally in open boxes with splayed rubbed brick voussoirs, but now in altered openings. Two ground-floor windows are 24-pane sashes. A central half-glazed and panelled door has a fanlight above, and is sheltered by a later porch supported on iron columns. The left return elevation features chequered red and grey brick with a plat band. There are two first-floor windows, one blocked, and a sash window. The ground floor has three windows, one blocked. A short wing projects at a right angle from the right side, parallel to and adjoining the rear wall of the main range. The right return elevation shows the gable end of the main range in purplish-red brick, and an adjoining red brick wing in Flemish bond, also with a plat band. This wing has irregular fenestration with four 18-pane sashes. The interior was not inspected.
