Description
The Loose War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with later additions. It is located within the extension of All Saints’ Churchyard on Church Street. The memorial features a Latin cross made of Portland stone, which has a reversed bronze sword on its face, inspired by Sir Reginald Blomfield’s ‘Cross of Sacrifice’ for the Imperial War Graves Commission. The cross is mounted on a square pedestal that sits on a two-stepped hexagonal Portland stone base.
The pedestal has four panels made of Aberdeen granite, one on each side, inscribed with the names of those who fell. The main dedication reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF LOOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." Each plaque frame features a cross within a circle carved in relief at the top.
Names of those who served in the Second World War are inscribed on two plaques positioned at an angle across the steps of the memorial, marked with the dates 1939 – 1945.
