Description

The Chequers Inn is an inn dating from the early to mid-17th century, with an addition from the late 18th or early 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure, with the ground floor weatherboarded and the first floor and attic rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles and the building has two storeys plus an attic.

A continuous jetty extends to the first floor, and there is a brick ridge stack located to the right of the center. The facade includes two broad, jettied, gabled eaves dormers, each adorned with plain bargeboards and one featuring a three-light casement window. The front has a regular arrangement of three windows, consisting of one canted three-light oriel window on a coved base beneath each dormer, and a small two-light casement window in the center.

On the ground floor, there are two canted bays on brick bases beneath the jetty, a blocked doorway to the left of center, and a half-glazed door at the left end. The late 18th or early 19th-century addition to the left is rendered and weatherboarded, also with two storeys, a moulded wooden eaves cornice, and a hipped plain-tile roof. This addition includes one tripartite window and one 12-pane sash window, along with a panelled door to the left of center, which is situated under a flat bracketed hood. There is a blocked carriage entrance at the left end and a later lean-to structure to the right of the inn, which has a panelled door. Additionally, there is a narrow two-storey rear wing to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
