Description
A house, possibly originally an inn, now a row of houses, dating from the 17th century with an earlier core and later alterations. The building is timber framed, with the front elevation rendered. The right gable end is pebbledashed towards the base, with weatherboarding above. It has a plain tile roof. The building was constructed at a right angle to the road, on a high bank. The main range comprises approximately two timber-framed bays. There is a cross wing to the left (west) end, projecting to the rear. A short rear wing was added to the right, with a further cross wing or addition at a right angle, parallel to the main range, and with a gable end projecting slightly towards the road. The main range and right addition are two storeys high. The left wing and rear range are also two storeys high, and include a garret, with higher eaves and a higher ridge. A high retaining wall made of ragstone merges with the cellar walls and the plinth of the right gable end. The roof of the main range is hipped to the right, and the roof of the left wing is hipped to the front. A multiple brick ridge stack is located at the left end of the main range. The windows are irregularly placed casements, including one three-light window to the left wing, and two two-light and one three-light window to the main range. A ribbed door is located to No. 2, towards the centre, under a plain tile pentice. Rear doors are present at Nos. 1 and 3. A small single-storey addition projects forwards from the left end of the main range. The interior, only partly inspected, reveals exposed timber framing to the main range, a clasped purlin roof with smoke-blackened, re-used rafters, and a stone fireplace.
