Description
House. Dating from the 17th century or earlier, it was extended and partially rebuilt in the mid to late 19th century. The house is timber-framed, with later brick casing, roughcast plaster, and colourwashing. It has tiled and slate roofs. The original L-shaped core of the building is at the rear, while the 19th-century front range, at a right angle, may be a rebuilding of an earlier wing. The house is two storeys high. The symmetrical 3-bay front facing the road has a projecting central bay beneath a roof slope. The ground floor has a central 2-light casement window, with sash windows on the outer sides, all recessed with arched heads. A platband (a horizontal decorative band) sits between the floors, stepping up towards the centre. The first floor has 8-pane and 4-pane sash windows with arched heads on the outer bays; the window to the left is a dummy. Axial stacks (chimneys) flank the central bay on the front slope. The rear roof slopes have steeper pitches on the gable ends. Bay windows are on the ground floor at the rear, with the left one being canted. The rear elevation of the right bay is roughcast. A separate gabled block with a slate roof was added in the 19th century to the rear of the left bay. An earlier wing projects from the rear. The left return elevation is brick-fronted with two bays visible, featuring an entrance with a tiled hood, a small casement window above, and 3-light casements to the left. The roughcast right return elevation has an entrance, a 2-light casement window, and a sash window. The rear gable end has roughcast above a weatherboarded ground floor, with 1- and 2-light casements. A lower, early bay projects to the right from the rear of the main early range. A large red brick stack with offsets is external to the main range and also on the cross axial line of the lower wing. In the inner angle towards the front of the lower wing is a catslide roof (a roof with a single sloping roof surface) over a lean-to outshut (a small, attached enclosure).
