Description

Aylwins Farm House is a 17th-century house that was originally three separate dwellings. It was refronted and extended in the early 19th century and further extended in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame with gault brick refronting and some rendered sections, topped by a hipped tiled roof. The original layout consisted of three cells with an additional bay at the rear, forming an L shape.

The house is two storeys high and has a four-window front. The entrance is located on the left side, flanked by 8-over-4 pane sash windows and a single casement window, all with segmental heads. The brick openings are recessed, and the right bay is rendered where the brick has deteriorated. A plat band runs along the building, and there is a red brick ridge stack to the right of the centre, capped with oversailing gault brick from the 19th century.

At the rear right, there is an early bay with a lower ridge, which includes an entrance and a first-floor sash window, with exposed plates visible. Attached to the rear of this bay is a former village lock-up, constructed of brick with a gable above a plank door, featuring a vaulted interior. This lock-up is now part of a weatherboarded range with a pantiled roof extending to the rear, while the left end of this range is rendered. Additionally, there is a two-storey 20th-century range attached to the rear left, which is not of special interest. At the centre of the rear, there is a 20th-century lean-to outshut with a 19th-century stack on the main range.
