Description

The Dairy House is a house with a complex history, originally built as a forge in the early 19th century, later used as a beerhouse, then as a dairy from 1920 to 1955, and now again as a house. It incorporates elements from the 16th or 17th century, alongside alterations from the 18th century and substantial additions and a new facade from the early to mid-19th century. The building is timber-framed and largely clad with channelled render, with the left gable end weatherboarded. It has a plain tile roof.

The structure consists of one timber-framed bay likely dating to the 16th or 17th century, with a second bay probably added in the 18th century, and an early to mid-19th century addition forming a short cross-wing to the left end. The building is two storeys and has a garret. A brick plinth is present to the left of the front door, while a stone plinth is on the right. The roof is broadly hipped to the left, with a high ridge over the left end bay, and half-hipped to the right. A buff brick stack is located towards the left end of the rear elevation. The fenestration is irregular, featuring three sash windows: a 16-pane sash to the left bay, one to the central bay, and a 12-pane sash set lower towards the right end, positioned under the former wall plate. A boarded door is situated to the right of the centre, sheltered by a plain tile canopy. A rendered rear lean-to has been added.

The interior features a chamfered cross-beam in the right bay, an 18th-century staircase between walls opposite the front door, with ramped recessed panelling along the left wall, and a corner fireplace in the central room. The building was formerly marked on Ordnance Survey maps as Almery Cottage.
