Description

MAIDSTONE SUTTON ROAD TQ 75 SE 11/390 BRIARWOOD II

House. Probably C17, possibly with earlier origins. Plastered timber frame. Thatched roof half-hipped and gabled ends. Large external gable-end brick stacks with tiled set-off and tall brick shafts.

Appears to be a 2-room plan with central entrance, possibly originally with a central unheated service room. Small C18 or C19 outshuts on each corner at rear.

2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 3-window north front. C20 3-light leaded pane casements, those on first floor in wide oriels, the centre first floor 4-lights. Central C20 brick porch. C20 casements are rear and single storey outshuts clasping the rear corners at either end with lean-to plain tile roofs. Interior: not inspected but said to have exposed timber frame and both rooms with large fireplaces, that to right infilled by C20 fireplace but with original bressumer above. Chamfered cross-beam and exposed joists in left hand room. Blocked diamond mullion window in partition between landing and left hand chamber. Roof apparently of side purlin and collar form.
