Description

Briarwood is a house that likely dates from the 17th century, although it may have earlier origins. It features a plastered timber frame and a thatched roof with half-hipped and gabled ends. The building has large external brick stacks at the gable ends, which have tiled set-offs and tall brick shafts.

The house appears to have a two-room layout with a central entrance, and it may have originally included an unheated service room in the middle. There are small outshuts from the 18th or 19th century at each corner of the rear.

It stands two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical three-window front facing north. The windows are 20th-century three-light leaded casements, with those on the first floor set in wide oriel windows, and a central four-light window on the first floor. A central 20th-century brick porch is present. The rear features 20th-century casements and single-storey outshuts that hug the rear corners, topped with lean-to roofs covered in plain tiles.

The interior has not been inspected but is reported to have an exposed timber frame, with both rooms containing large fireplaces. The fireplace on the right has been infilled with a 20th-century fireplace but retains the original bressumer above it. The left room features a chamfered cross-beam and exposed joists. There is a blocked diamond mullion window in the partition between the landing and the left chamber. The roof is said to be of side purlin and collar form.
