Description
Gorran's Down is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century, although there is little evidence to confirm this. It was extended in the 19th century. The building has rendered walls that are probably made of rubble, with some cob, and features a thatched roof that is gabled at the right end and hipped at the left. There are two brick stacks, one axial and one at the right gable end. The original layout is unclear due to 20th-century alterations, but it currently consists of two large rooms. It may have originally been two cottages with a two-room plan, as indicated by a thick central wall that divides the house next to the axial chimneystack. The 19th-century outshuts have been added along the rear wall and at the left-hand end.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with three windows. The first floor features late 19th-century four-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has later 20th-century two-light casements. There is a 20th-century gabled porch to the right of the center with a glazed door, and a lean-to outbuilding or store is attached to the left-hand end.
Inside, there are few early features currently visible, but there is evidence that a 17th-century fireplace may still exist at the right-hand end. The roof structure consists of straight principal rafters from the 18th or 19th century.
