Description
Philham Water Cottage is a cottage dating from the 18th century, with a 19th-century addition. The front wall is made of stone rubble, while the rear and side walls are constructed of cob. The roof features a thatched gable at the right end and is hipped at the left, with a brick stack located at the gable end. The cottage has a single room layout, with a fireplace situated in the right-hand end wall and a doorway towards the left-hand end. A 19th-century outshut has been added at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical front that has one window, featuring 19th-century small-paned casements. Below the first-floor central window is an opening that has external wooden shutters. To the left, there is a 19th-century plank door that is slightly recessed from the front wall and covered by a thatch door hood. The rear of the cottage includes the 19th-century outshut.
Inside, the fireplace has a plain wooden lintel and a cloam oven to the left. There is a staircase located in the rear left-hand corner. An unusual niche with a pointed head is present in the rear wall, marking this cottage as a rare example of a very unaltered, likely squatters' cottage.
