Description

Hillcrest is a house dating from the early to mid 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th or 19th century and the 20th century. It features a plastered timber frame and a thatched roof with gabled ends, along with a brick axial stack. The original house has a two-room plan, with a larger room on the left and a smaller room on the right, both heated by large back-to-back fireplaces located in the central axial stack. There is a lobby entrance at the front. The right end has a one-room plan extension from the 18th or 19th century, and a 20th-century porch at the front, along with a small 20th-century outshut at the rear right.

The exterior is two storeys with an attic and has a somewhat asymmetrical two-window southeast front featuring 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The central porch is gabled with a pantile roof and a plank door. The right extension is one storey with an attic, a gable-ended pantile roof, and a small two-light casement. There is a two-light attic casement on the left gable end. At the rear, there are two and three-light casements, a French casement on the right, and a small outshut on the left. In the centre of the first floor, there is a small two-light diamond mullion window.

Inside, some wall framing is exposed. Both ground floor rooms feature chamfered axial beams with hollow step stops and exposed joists, with the left room's joists also chamfered and having hollow step stops. Each room contains a large brick fireplace in the axial stack, with chamfered timber lintels; the left room's lintel has hollow step stops. The first floor and attic were not inspected.
