Description
The Old Guildhall is a late 16th-century building that has been converted into two dwellings. It features a timber frame with sections of wattle and daub and clay lump infill, and the ground floor is faced with brick. The exterior is colour-washed, and the roof is covered with pantiles. The structure has two storeys and a dormer attic, with three doorways, one of which is in a moulded case on the east side.
There are four 18th-century casement windows with shutters, and the upper storey jetties out, showcasing close studding that is tenoned into a bressummer. The first floor has five 18th-century casements, including one made of iron and another that slides horizontally. The timber frame is supported by three straight braces, and the wall plate is exposed. The gabled roof has overhanging eaves and a single gabled dormer window.
The building has an external stack on the west, a central ridge stack, and an internal stack on the east. At the rear, there are two outshuts that likely date to the early 17th century. The main wall features early 18th-century casements in horizontal openings, and some chequered brickwork can be seen on the lower storey, along with one two-light timber mullioned window.
Inside, there is a longitudinal central passage and two staircases, both with ovens located underneath. The roof structure includes a crown post with an octagonal shape, supported by polygonal moulded bases and capitals, which hold two arched braces. There are also side and crown purlins, and tie beams resting on arched braces.
