Description
The Banham War Memorial is a memorial dedicated to those who fought in the First and Second World Wars. It was erected around 1920, with the names of the fallen from the Second World War added after 1945.
The memorial is carved from Portland stone and is located on the Green near St Mary’s Church in Banham, Norfolk. It is prominently placed in an open grassy area in the center of the village. The structure features a Latin head cross of sacrifice with a downturned bronze sword on the face, resembling Sir Reginald Blomefield’s Cross of Sacrifice. This cross is mounted on an octagonal shaft with a moulded foot, which sits on an octagonal plinth atop a three-stepped octagonal base. Recently, plaques with inscriptions and a Roll of Honour have been added.
The plinth bears the inscription: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO / FOUGHT IN A NOBLE CAUSE / THEY DIED THAT ENGLAND / MIGHT LIVE / A.D. 1914 – 1919 // (NAMES) // 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES)."
