Description
32 Earl Street is a club building dating from 1883. It is constructed of ashlar, with the front of the ground floor painted. The roof is concealed behind a parapet, and has clerestory lights to the central span. The building is in an Italianate style.
The building is symmetrical with a four-bay front, and has three storeys and a basement. The ground floor has a rusticated round-headed doorway to the right, featuring a human mask in the keystone, and three windows to the left. The bays are divided by pilasters with large fluted consoles supporting a dentilled cornice. Above this is a balcony with an ornate wrought iron balustrade to the first floor. The first and second floors have a 1:2:1 bay arrangement, with a moulded string course at the second floor level. A dentilled cornice and balustraded parapet with a pedimental centrepiece top the building, the tympanum carved with two shields surrounded by foliage. Tall, round-headed first floor windows have moulded architraves, keystones, and imposts. The ground and second floor windows are 19th-century sash windows with no glazing bars, whilst the first floor windows are French casements. A stone inscription on the central pier reads "This stone was laid February 9th 1883" but the name is obscured by the balustrade.
The interior has not been inspected, but may contain original club fixtures and features. According to Kelly’s Directory of 1927, the building was the premises of the Mid-Kent Conservative Club.
