Description

Barling Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and has plaster infilling, with part of the ground floor on the left side clad in a chequered pattern of red and grey brick. The roof is made of plain tiles and features a Wealden design with four unequal-length timber-framed bays. The building has two storeys set on a brick plinth and is close studded.

The left end bay is very narrow and jettied, while the broad right end bay is also jettied, with the jetty formerly extending to the right but now underbuilt on a moulded dragon post. The undershot cross-passage is marked by the framing and jetty of the right bay. There is a braced flying wall-plate, and notably, there is no bracket under the central tie-beam. The roof is hipped and has gablets, with a brick stack located on the front slope of the roof within the cross-passage.

The fenestration is irregular, with no windows in the left end bay or the narrow left bay of the hall. The right hall bay features a three-light casement window, while the centre of the right end bay has a two-light casement that projects slightly on a moulded cill. There is a similar window on the ground floor, and a boarded door is located beneath the stack. The rear of the farmhouse has extensions. The interior, which was only partially inspected, reveals exposed framing.
