Description

Lower Dean's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with a 16th-century addition. It is timber framed with rendered infilling, and the ground floor is mostly rendered except for a small area. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building features a Wealden design with an open hall that has two roughly equal bays; the bay on the right is subdivided to create a cross-passage, while the storeyed bay on the left is likely framed separately and dates from the 16th century. The farmhouse has two storeys on a plinth, with jettied end bays, the left one being underbuilt. The left side has a curved brace supporting the flying wall-plate, a solid bracket beneath the central tie-beam, and a small curved brace under the right end tie-beam of the recess. The first floor and part of the ground floor are close-studded, with the right end bay featuring a moulded fillet halfway up the first floor and the left end bay having a vestigial fillet, possibly a repair. The roof is hipped, with a central brick stack on the front slope and a red brick stack at the right end. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of five windows, including three-light and single-light casements. There is a ribbed door at the right end of the hall and another ribbed door with a rectangular leaded light at the left end bay. The interior has not been inspected.
