Description
Brissenden House is an early 17th-century farmhouse in East Sutton, originally listed as "Brissenden". It is timber-framed with plaster infilling and has a plain tile roof, arranged in an L-shape. The main range comprises four timber-framed bays of varying lengths, and a short return wing. The building stands on a stone plinth and has close studding. The left gable was formerly jettied with shaped brackets, but has since been cut back. A brick stack is located in the narrow bay second from the right. The window arrangement is irregular, featuring leaded mullioned and transomed windows. An 8-light window is centrally positioned on each end bay. A two-storey rectangular bay is set into the second timber-framed bay from the left, with a 10-light window on each floor, and blocked frieze windows on the first floor. A blocked window is located in the centre of the stack bay. On the ground floor, there’s an 8-light window in the left end bay, a 10-light window in the right end bay, and a 3-light ovolo-moulded mullion frieze window to the right of the bay window. A ribbed door is situated at the left end of the second bay from the left, above which is a 3-light ovolo-moulded mullion window. A short rear wing to the right has a close-studded and jettied rear gable to the first floor and attic, supported by shaped brackets. The interior was only partly inspected, revealing an octagonal newel staircase behind the stack. There is exposed timber framing, with edge-halved scarf joints visible.
