Description
A pair of houses dating from the 18th century, located on the High Street in Sandgate. They are three storeys high and have weatherboarded facades. The roofs are hipped and tiled, with a wooden modillion eaves cornice; the roof of number 57 has more recently replaced tiles. Each house has two sash windows, with the central two windows being double-sashed. Number 57 features a later four-light bay window on the first floor and a three-light canted bay window on the second floor. Number 59 has a three-light canted bay window extending through both the first and second floors. The shopfronts are from the 19th century. The central doorways have rectangular fanlights and six-panelled doors. The buildings form a group with numbers 23 to 39 (odd), the cottage behind number 39, and numbers 41 to 65 (odd), including 43A, 45A, 55A and 61A; numbers 31 to 37 are buildings of local interest.
