Description
Sandgate Library, built in 1884, was originally designed as a dual fire station and reading room. It is a two-storey building featuring applied timber-framing with pebble-dashed infill. The hipped tiled roof has a square bell cote on the left side, topped with a fishscale tiled spire. The first floor includes a Scottish baronial style bartizan on the left side, which has a three-light sash window. There is a band of machicolation between the ground and first floors. The ground floor features a simple doorcase on the left side and an entrance on the right side that was designed to accommodate fire engines. The library is part of a group with Nos 23 to 39 (odd), a cottage to the rear of No 39, and Nos 41 to 65 (odd), including 43A, 45A, 55A, and 61A. Nos 31 to 37 are buildings of local interest.
