Description

No. 40 High Street is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with some parts rebuilt in the early 17th century. It features a timber frame and is rendered, with painted brick on the left side and a plain tiled roof. Originally designed as a Wealden hall house, it has two storeys and a continuous jetty that extends over three levels. The roof is hipped with gablets and has stacks on the right side, while the left end projects and is offset.

On the first floor, there are five wooden casements, and on the ground floor to the left, there is a three-light mullioned and transomed window, along with two four-light bays in the centre and to the right. A rib and stud door is set in a four-centred arched surround to the left, and there is a basement opening to the right. Inside, the house features a smoke-blackened crown post roof. The left end bay was rebuilt in the 17th century when the hall was floored, and there are also rear wings from the 16th and 18th centuries.
