Description

No 1 Sandown Road is a corner house dating from the early 19th century. It stands three storeys tall with a cemented front and features an eaves cornice. The building has two windows facing Sandown Road and three windows facing Alfred Square, although the glazing bars are missing. The shop windows are modern. A notable feature is the good doorcase on Sandown Road, which includes leaf capitals, a pediment, a semi-circular fanlight, and a six-panel moulded door. There is a later doorcase on Alfred Square, which has an architrave supported on consoles and a rectangular fanlight. No 1 forms a group with Nos 1 to 8A Alfred Square.
