Description
Nos 1 and 2 High Street, formerly the Chequers Inn, is a significant building that originally housed a dormitory with 100 beds. It is a large 14th-century timber-framed structure that has been altered in the 18th century and more recently. The building stands three storeys high with an attic, featuring overhanging first and second floors supported by heavy wooden brackets. There are four windows facing High Street and two windows facing Mercery Lane, along with two dormers. The 18th-century sash windows have missing glazing bars, but some remnants of timber cusp-headed windows can still be seen. The ground floor includes a stone arcade with the emblem of the Black Prince on the corner post, although modern shop fronts have been added. This building forms a group with Nos 1 to 8A Mercery Lane.
