Description

The Royal East Kent Yeomanry War Memorial and associated horse trough is a war memorial dedicated in 1922, designed by Bradley Dyne. The memorial features a Portland stone column adorned with wreathed medallions on two sides that display the regimental insignia and motto, topped with a coronet. Below the wreaths are single broken spurs. The column is crowned by an urn and stands on a two-tier square stone base, which has stone plaques on all four sides. The plaque facing the road reads "TO THE MEMORY OF THE OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE ROYAL EAST KENT YEOMANRY," with "AND KENT YEOMANRY" added below. The back plaque simply states "SOUTH AFRICA 1900-1901." One of the remaining plaques lists the campaigns in which the regiment participated during the Great War, while the other notes "ROYAL EAST KENT YEOMANRY RAISED 1794 DISBANDED 1921."

The horse trough, made of granite, features a moulded top, an inscription, and is set on feet and a plinth. The memorial was unveiled on October 15, 1922, shortly after the regiment was disbanded, and it was dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The horse trough commemorates the horses of the regiment.

This memorial is significant due to its historical and cultural importance, both locally and nationally. It is prominently located on the High Street and serves as a tribute to a recently disbanded local regiment, while the adjacent horse trough is a rare memorial honoring the animals that served in war.
