Description

No. 8 High Street is a building that dates from the late 14th century, with additional features from the 18th century and around 1870. It is notable for its late 14th-century timber-framed core. The front of the building is part of a terrace constructed shortly after a fire in 1865, which is not listed. The High Street facade is four storeys high and is cement rendered, featuring a bracket eaves cornice and pilasters. There are three sash windows with cornices and brackets on the second floor, and the first floor has round-headed arches with keystones. The shopfront is a later addition.

Behind the facade, the original late 14th-century structure is a three-storeyed double-jettied house with a cellar that contains a niche below. This house originally had three bays, oriented endwise to the street, with the hall likely located in the middle bay. Most of the framing remains, along with bronze 17th-century posts. The rear elevation has three storeys and was altered in the 18th century, with the ground floor built in brick and the upper floors rendered. It features two sashes with intact glazing bars, a ground floor canted bay, and a doorcase with a rectangular fanlight. On the second storey, there are two original medieval windows that have holes for window bars and grooves for sliding shutters, surrounded by original 15th-century yellow brick infill.
