Description
41 and 41B High Street is a shop with additional accommodation at the rear. The building dates from the 16th century, with extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries at the back, and the front elevation was remodeled in the 20th century. It is a timber-framed structure, with the exterior covered in 20th-century framing and plastered infill, topped by a tiled roof. The gabled front jetties at the second floor level and features early 20th-century applied timbering and moulded bargeboards. There are two plain sash windows, while the earlier facades have been replaced by a 1960s double-height shop front that includes a mock half-timbered panel on the first floor.
At the rear, there is a brick and tiled structure from the 18th century, followed by a small brick-built unit with a corrugated roof that connects to two 19th-century brick buildings: one is two stories with a slate roof, and the other is three stories with a hipped tiled roof and two projecting bay windows at the second floor level. The interior of the front part features an oak-framed structure with clasped side purlins in a roof of four bays, supported by wind braces. A notable 17th-century turned baluster staircase connects the first and second floors. The second-floor structure includes 16th-century oak joists with ogee, chamfer, and roll mouldings, although these are obscured by later finishes.
