Description
The Guildhall, located at 944 High Street, is a building with a modern exterior but contains older elements within. In the basement, there is a heavily altered vault dating back to around 1200. Above this, the hall consists of six bays, which have been significantly modernized and are currently used as a courtroom. The two bays closest to the High Street appear to be a later addition, likely from the late 17th century. The main hall, featuring a roof with moulded tie-beams and wall plates, probably dates from the 14th to 15th century. The side facing Guildhall Street was adorned with ornamental brickwork in 1700 but was completely remodeled and covered with cement rendering in 1904. The main walls are likely made of flint and chalk rubble. The two additional bays have a weak timber-framed wall on the west side. The building is scheduled as an ancient monument.
