Description

TR 03 NE ALDINGTON CALLEYWELL LANE (east side) 4/5 Symnel Cottage 14.3.86 GV II House. C15, extended and restored 1920's. Timber framed and exposed with plaster infill and underbuilt with red brick. Tile hung on right return. Plain tiled roof. End jettied hall house plan of 4 bays with rear wing. Two storeys and attic on plinth, with exposed framing on 1st floor, hipped roof with gablets and with gabled semi-dormer to right and stack to centre left. Three wooden casements on 1st floor, and 4 on ground floor with segmental heads (that to centre left replacing doorway). Entry by plank and stud doors in left return and rear wing. Exposed jetty on left return, and truncated stack on right return. Storey and attic wing to rear (1920's) in matching style. Interior: double ogee bracing to interior divisions. Double service doorways in former screens passage, pointed arched and chamfered, constructed of durns with iron hinge-pins. Crenellated dais beam in former hall, with double chamfered cambered tie beam in upper hall area, supporting octagonal crown post with moulded capital and base, about 4 feet in height.
