Description

Symnel Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century, which was extended and restored in the 1920s. It features a timber frame with exposed plaster infill and is underbuilt with red brick. The right side is tile hung, and the roof is plain tiled. The building has an end jettied hall house plan with four bays and a rear wing, standing two storeys and an attic on a plinth. The first floor has exposed framing, a hipped roof with gablets, and a gabled semi-dormer to the right, with a stack located to the centre left. There are three wooden casements on the first floor and four on the ground floor, all with segmental heads, with the centre left window replacing a doorway. Access is through plank and stud doors located in the left return and the rear wing. The left return features an exposed jetty, and there is a truncated stack on the right return. The rear wing, added in the 1920s, matches the original style. Inside, there is double ogee bracing in the interior divisions, and double service doorways in the former screens passage, which are pointed arched and chamfered, made of durns with iron hinge-pins. A crenellated dais beam is present in the former hall, along with a double chamfered cambered tie beam in the upper hall area that supports an octagonal crown post with a moulded capital and base, approximately four feet tall.
