Description
This barn, located about 30 metres northwest of Mersham Manor, dates from the early to mid-14th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, standing on a ragstone base, with ragstone and red brick cladding on the rear elevations. The roof is plain tiled and hipped, with hipped strays on both sides. Inside, the barn features four full bays with aisles and cantilevered terminal outshots, although these are somewhat obscured by later divisions. One end bay and the aisles were extensively reconstructed around 1600, but the main structure and part of the aisle (reversed assembly) likely date back to the early 14th century, contemporary with the adjacent Mersham Manor. The barn includes keyed scarfs and thick, nearly straight braces, and has a clasped purlin roof. Notably, one feature, the pegged wedges, has been dated elsewhere to between 1284 and 1306.
