Description
The barn at Mere Farm, located approximately 22 metres west-southwest of Mere House, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a brick plinth, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The structure consists of four bays, with a cart entrance on the east side. A corresponding entrance on the west side is a later addition that leads into a former midstrey, which has been mostly demolished, leaving part of its roof to form a gable over the entrance.
Inside, the barn showcases a high-quality frame with chamfered studwork and long straight tension braces in each bay that cut through the studs. The roof is constructed with arch-braced ties, collars, and double tiers of butt purlins, along with intermediate pairs of principal rafters that do not have tie beams. The four jowled posts that form the entrance bay feature wave mouldings at the springing of the jowl. This barn is part of a group that includes Mere House and another barn located approximately 34 metres south-southwest of Mere House.
