Description

The Church of St Margaret is a parish church that dates back to the medieval period. It is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings and features both thatched and slate roofs. The building includes a west tower, a nave, a 19th-century vestry, and a south porch, while the chancel originates from the 13th century. The round tower has a west window with two cusped lights and stone-dressed round-headed slit lights on the west, south, and north sides of the ringing chamber. The tower has likely been raised and includes four brick-dressed openings for the belfry, a rebuilt section of 18th-century brick, a brick parapet, and a small lead-covered spire.

The nave is buttressed, and its gable wall to the west has been rebuilt in gault brick. On the south side, there are two restored three-light windows under four-centred arches with panel tracery that features embattled demi-transoms and hood moulds. The vestry, located to the north of the nave, has a post-medieval window to the west, a restored cusped Y-tracery window, and another restored window with two ogee lights. The unbuttressed chancel has two restored cusped Y-tracery windows on the south side and one lancet window on the north side, along with a 19th-century east window with three lights. The porch was rebuilt in the 19th century and features a re-used arch-braced roof.

The nave doorway is continuously moulded with two orders of wave moulding, deeply undercut to form a fillet in the arch, and it retains a medieval door. Inside, there is a round tower arch with imposts, and the nave roof is covered. Wall paintings can be found on the north and south walls, and there are remains of a rood stair with doorjambs that show traces of paint. The lower panels of the screen are decorated with painted flowers, while the upper parts date to the 19th century. The chancel arch features polygonal shafts, and there is a cusped piscina and drop-sill sedilia. The chancel has a boarded roof and a small amount of medieval glass. The church also contains a sacrament font, which is mentioned in a will from 1473 regarding its 'reparation'.
