Description

This building, located at 2 West Street, is a Grade II listed structure that was originally a large house but has been converted into flats above shops. It dates from the mid-18th century, with 19th and 20th-century alterations. The exterior features painted brickwork with a tiled roof and has a symmetrical front facing east, consisting of two storeys and an attic with a configuration of two, one, and two windows. The brickwork is laid in Flemish bond with rubbed flat arches, a moulded band at the first floor, stone cills, and a plinth. The windows are Victorian sashes, and there are three flat-roofed dormers with sashes.

On the ground floor, each side of the slightly projecting centrepiece has shopfronts that include a cornice and frieze. The hipped tiled roof has a moulded eaves cornice, although the lower modillion part is now missing. A wide stone Doric doorcase features triglyphs, fluted pilasters, and an eight-panelled door (two of which are glazed), accessed by stone steps.

The return elevation facing south towards West Street is also symmetrical, with a window arrangement of one, one, and one. The projecting centrepiece is supported by ten cut brackets above the first floor band. The windows here are also Victorian sashes, and there is one dormer with sashes. The former ground-floor window on the west side has been converted into a 20th-century half-glazed door, while the east side features a shopfront with access at the angle. This elevation retains the full modillion eaves cornice, which returns at the angles.
