Description
Tollgate Cottage is a cottage that was formerly a tollhouse, built around 1833 and later extended in the 19th century. It is constructed of painted brick and features a clay plain tile roof with gabled ends and toothed corbelled brick eaves. The cottage has large brick stacks at both gable ends. The layout consists of a two-room plan with gable-end stacks and a central lobby entrance, which includes a straight staircase between the two rooms. A small one-room plan wing was added at the rear later in the 19th century.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window east front. The ground and first floor windows on the left are two-light iron casements with lozenge-shaped panes, while the right-hand ground floor has a wooden two-light casement with a blind window above it. The central doorway features a 20th-century plank door and a gabled brick porch with a pointed arch. At the rear, there is a small single-storey wing with an outshut on the left and a 20th-century glazed lean-to on the right. The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain some original fireplaces.
