Description
Berrydown Farmhouse and the attached donkey wheel are located in Hursley and have origins dating back to the 17th century, with the main building constructed in the 18th century and altered in the 19th century. The farmhouse features a timber-frame core that is encased in brick, with most of the exterior rendered and a plain tile roof. It is a two-storey, four-bay house with a 1½ storey well house at the right end.
The entrance is located to the left of the center and includes an 18th-century two-panel door set in a solid frame, which is sheltered by a 20th-century rustic log gabled porch. On either side of the doorway are 18th-century 12-pane sash windows with segmental heads, while the right end has an early 20th-century door and a casement window. On the first floor, there are four 19th-century three-light casements, with the rightmost window featuring cast iron lozenge-pane casements. Above the center bays are gabled dormers that contain two-light cast iron lozenge-pane casements. The house has chimney stacks on the ridge to the right of center and at the left end.
To the right of the farmhouse, the well house projects forward and is constructed with 18th-century brickwork on the outside and timber framing on the inside. Its roof is half-hipped. Inside the well house, there is a 17th-century donkey wheel that has a diameter of 3 meters and a width of 1 meter, with a 4-meter-long shaft in a complete frame, capped at the well.
