Description
The Close Boundary Walls and Gates at Priors Gate date from 1833. They are constructed of limestone rubble and are particularly well preserved in Symonds Street and St Swithun Street. The main entrance to the Close, known as the Prior's Gate, features a 15th-century plain four-centred arch with original traceried doors and a coat-of-arms above the arch. The structure is topped with a castellated parapet. These walls and gates are listed separately as they do not run in conjunction with the city wall, which dates back to the 13th century and later. All listed buildings in The Close are considered to form a group.
