Description

City Gate is a Grade I listed structure dating from the first quarter of the 14th century, with possible rebuilding in the second half of the 14th century. Work on the adjoining city walls began in 1352 or 1355, and a licence to crenellate was granted in 1363, with completion of the work occurring in 1385. The gate is constructed from sandstone and features a four-centred arch, side buttresses, and 19th century or modern embattlements. It includes one double light stone mullioned window with trefoil cusped arches and gargoyles. City Gate is the only remaining functional gate in the city and forms a group with Swanswell Gate and the City Wall to the north of Swanswell Gate on Hales Street.
