Description

Fisher Gate is a Grade I listed building located on the south side of The Quay in Sandwich. It is the only surviving original medieval town gate, with lower portions dating from around 1384 and upper portions added in 1578. The structure features a gateway with a three-storey building above it. The gateway has pointed stone arches set within a square arch, with spandrels faced in squared flints. The lower sections are primarily constructed of squared flints, with stone quoins and some stone rubble incorporated at the ground floor. The upper floors are mainly built of brick. A stone string course runs above the first floor, where buttresses project sideways. There is a restored three-light window with a dripstone above it on the first floor, flanked by blocked loop lights. The second and third floors have modern windows, and a brick gable caps the top floor. A portcullis groove is present in the centre arch. The surrounding buildings and walls facing the Quay, along with Nos 3 and 5 Upper Strand Street, form a cohesive group.
