Description
19 and 21 Upper Strand Street is a 16th-century timber-framed house that was refronted with red brick in the 18th century, facing Upper Strand Street. The original timber framing is visible on the first floor along Quay Lane, featuring curved braces overhanging on the bressummer and brick brackets. The house has sash windows, with those on the ground floor having cambered head linings and intact glazing bars. There are two doorways with small flat hoods above. The building is two storeys high, with two windows facing Upper Strand Street and one window facing Quay Lane.
Inside, there are two 16th-century plaster ceilings and a painted plaster coat of arms above the fireplace on the ground floor, although the original panelling and staircase have been removed. At the corner of No 19, there is a mid-19th-century gas lamp mounted on a bracket. The lamp has a square plan lantern that is larger at the top than at the bottom, with a sloping roof that terminates in a bell-shaped vent, scalloped cap, and finial.
