Description

Brampton Bryan Castle is a Grade I listed structure, with ruins dating from the early and late 14th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and has an irregular plan featuring round gatehouse towers aligned east to west. Between these towers is a long passage that leads north to an earlier inner gatehouse. The castle likely originally had three storeys.

The south elevation showcases a pair of embattled, roughly cylindrical round towers connected by two superimposed moulded arches, both of which are two-centred. Beneath the springing point of the upper arch, there is a moulded frieze adorned with ball flowers. The arches die into their jambs. The left tower features a moulded label over a moulded lancet, with two loops beneath and a small square opening above. The right tower has similar fenestration but includes a smaller, cinquefoil-headed two-centred opening. An octagonal central chimney shaft, likely from the 16th century, is also present.

On the north elevation, there are two trefoil-headed openings, one for each former floor, above a large two-centred entrance arch. The interior contains portcullis slots, an ogee-headed entry into the west tower, and a two-centred entry to the east tower.
