Description

Penrith Castle is a Grade I listed structure located on Ullswater Road. The castle features red sandstone ruins and was granted a licence to crenellate in 1397. It has a square plan with a gateway on the north-east side and includes a circular well in the courtyard. There were additions made around 1470. The south wall and east tower still stand to a considerable height, along with tunnel vaults, Perpendicular windows, and pointed arched fireplace flues. The ruins of the gatehouse can be found on the north-west side.
