Description

The War Memorial Gate is a First World War memorial built in 1923, with additions for the Second World War. It is constructed from regular sandstone blocks with ashlar dressings and features bronze name plaques.

The gate has a rectangular plan with a wide central entrance flanked by pavilions. The exterior includes a steeply-roofed gabled archway with raised stone verges. The chamfered surface of the arch features the carved inscription: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE," beneath a stopped hoodmould, and is flanked by stepped and coped buttresses. At the apex of the gable, there is an inset stone plaque with the date 1914/1918. Each side has a projecting pavilion designed as a canted bay with stone coping and a string course; one window opening is present on the short side, while the long side has paired two-light mullioned windows. All windows include metal inserts. The rear elevation is similar but simpler, lacking the inscription and buttresses.

Inside, the pavilions have timber roof structures and raised stone-kerbed floors with replacement benches. Each pavilion contains a large bronze plaque on the south-east wall that reads: "THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 / 'HONOUR THE FALLEN BRAVE' / (NAMES in 2 columns)." One pavilion also displays a similar bronze plaque that states: "THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945 / HONOUR THE FALLEN BRAVE / (names in 2 columns)."
