Description
The Belford War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, erected in 1922. It is made of freestone and features bronze plaques.
The memorial consists of a tiered stone of remembrance, which is formed by a stepped wall flanked by matching piers. A projecting plinth at the base is supported by corbels. The front face of the main wall displays four rectangular plaques that list the names of 54 individuals who fell in the First World War in three columns. The upper tier records the names of 21 individuals from the Second World War. Curving walls connect the stone of remembrance to the front piers, with wrought iron railings attached.
The inscription on the front reads "1914-18 (NAMES) / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" and "1939 (NAMES) 1945."
The memorial was designed by Mr. G H Lawson, with the masonry work completed by Messrs Tully and Sons. It was unveiled and dedicated in March 1922. This memorial holds significant historical and cultural importance at both local and national levels, serving as a competent and unusual example of a structure that commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It has clear special historic interest, meeting the criteria for national listing.
