Description

The Alcombe War Memorial is a First World War memorial, likely dating from the early 1920s, with additional names added after the Second World War. It is constructed of coursed, cut, and squared sandstone under a hipped slate roof. The memorial takes the form of an open shelter or shrine, with a roof supported by four stone columns. Inside is a wooden pentaptych. The central panel of the pentaptych features a carved wooden cross in relief, surmounted by a wooden pediment bearing the painted dedication "FOR/ GOD, KING & COUNTRY". Two wooden panels are positioned on either side of the cross; the inner panels list the names of those who died in the First World War, and the outer panels, added later, commemorate those lost in the Second World War. Beneath the pentaptych is a rectangular stone slab inscribed with the words “NEVER FORGET/ THAT ALL THESE LIVES/ WERE WILLINGLY GIVEN/ THAT YOU MIGHT BE/ FREE.” A roughly-hewn stone planter beside the memorial holds a metal plaque inscribed "In Loving Memory/ J LOCKER AND COMRADES/ WHO FELL AT ARRAS/ April 26 1917/ R.I.P.” The later 20th-century stone wall and pedestrian gate to the front of the memorial are excluded from the listing as they are not of special architectural or historic interest.
