Description
Staunton Cottage is a building located in Minehead, specifically on Staunton Lane in Alcombe. This cottage dates from the 16th century or early 17th century and was altered and extended in the 18th century. It features cob construction on rubblestone with a thatched roof that is hipped to the left and gabled to the right. There is a snecked rubblestone stack that was formerly external, located at the right gable end. The left-hand wing, also thatched, is made of rubblestone. The cottage has a two-unit plan with a lower two-storey wing added in the 18th century on the left side. It stands two storeys high and has a one-window range. The windows and doors, which are from the late 19th century, have timber lintels. The entrance to the former wash-house is on the return of the 18th-century wing, facing the lane, while the room above is accessible from inside the cottage.
Inside, there are three stop-chamfered cross-beams and an oak lintel above an open fire on the ground floor to the right, which is now blocked. The stairs date from the 19th century. The roof is plastered, but one truss and two windbraces, likely from the 16th century, are exposed.
