Description
The Penrith Boer War Memorial, built in 1906 by F W Doyle Jones, is a significant granite structure featuring a bronze figure. It is prominently situated in Castle Park, serving as a focal point. The memorial depicts a winged female figure representing peace, who is raising her arms and holding a laurel wreath. This figure stands on a scrolled step adorned with a carved bay wreath, which is positioned atop a tapered plinth that features draped cartouches beneath a cornice. The base consists of three steps, marked with the sculptor's name, and includes a bay leaf pattern torus at the step. The front of the pedestal bears an inscription in black lettering that reads:
PRO PATRIA/IN MEMORY OF THE /MEN OF THIS TOWN/AND/ DISTRICT WHO FELL IN THE/SOUTH AFRICAN WAR/ 1899-1902
The names of fourteen fallen soldiers are inscribed below, listed by regiment, rank, and surname, with an additional two names on the rear. Each corner of the memorial is accented by a low carved stone pillar.
